Description of exercise Stair stepping down (non recip) w/assist is a lower body exercise that involves stepping down from a raised platform, such as a step or stair, with the assistance of a support or railing. It is a great exercise for improving balance, coordination, and lower body strength. To perform this exercise, stand facing a step or stair with one hand on a support or railing for balance. Step down with one foot, lowering your body until your heel touches the ground. Then, push through your heel to return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. This exercise can be modified by using a lower step or increasing the speed of the movement for a more challenging workout.

How to do exercise
  • Stand in front of child with hands supporting their hips and shoulders or holding their hand. It may help to have a safety belt at their waist.
  • Child shifts weight to right, bends right knee and and places left foot on step.
  • Child shifts weight to left foot and steps down so both feet are on step.
  • Continue to step down leading with the left leg.
  • Repeat exercise stepping with the right leg.
